Greater Fort Lauderdale has long been known for its golden beaches, waterfront lifestyle, and year-round sunshine, but the destination is increasingly earning recognition for its commitment to creating an inclusive and accessible experience to all travelers. This summer, the South Florida destination continues to expand initiatives designed to ensure visitors of all backgrounds, identities, and abilities can experience the region comfortably, confidently, and authentically.
Accessibility and inclusivity have become central to Greater Fort Lauderdale’s tourism vision, shaping everything from beaches and cultural attractions to hotels and public spaces.
One of the most groundbreaking developments is the upcoming Sensory Friendly Beaches Initiative, launching destination wide in 2026. In partnership with the nonprofit organization KultureCity, Greater Fort Lauderdale will become the first destination in the world to introduce a comprehensive sensory-friendly beaches program. The initiative is designed to support travelers who benefit from reduced sensory stimulation, including neurodivergent visitors and families seeking calmer travel experiences.

The program includes sensory-inclusive staff training for lifeguards and beach personnel, designated quiet zones, clear signage, and access to sensory tools intended to reduce overstimulation. Alongside its beautiful coastline, the region is redefining what beach accessibility can look like for modern travelers.
Greater Fort Lauderdale also remains one of the most welcoming LGBTQ+ destinations in the United States. Widely recognized as Florida’s LGBTQ+ capital, the area offers an atmosphere rooted in visibility, diversity, and celebration. At the heart of the community is Wilton Manors, South Florida’s iconic “gayborhood,” known for its vibrant nightlife, inclusive businesses, and strong sense of community.

Travelers can spend the day relaxing at Sebastian Street Beach, one of the nation’s most celebrated gay beaches, before exploring local dining venues, bars, and entertainment spaces that cater to a wide spectrum of LGBTQ+ travelers. Cultural experiences such as the Stonewall National Museum & Archives further reinforce the area’s role as both a leisure destination and a center for LGBTQ+ history and advocacy.
Beyond its inclusive culture, Greater Fort Lauderdale continues to prioritize accessible tourism experiences across arts, entertainment, and outdoor recreation. Attractions such as the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, and Museum of Discovery and Science offer wheelchair accessibility, sensory-friendly programming, and assisted services that help ensure every visitor can engage fully with the destination’s cultural offerings.
Nature experiences are equally accessible. Visitors can explore accessible beaches and parks throughout Broward County, many of which offer adaptive amenities and beach wheelchairs. Family-friendly attractions including Butterfly World, Flamingo Gardens, and Jungle Queen Riverboat provide opportunities for travelers of varying mobility levels to experience South Florida’s natural beauty and wildlife.
